Richmond offers an exploration of an essential chapter of America's history in its cobblestone streets, river walks, and monuments. Its arts and food scene, as well as in addition to its 400 year commemoration of several important events that occurred in Virginia in 1619 (among them the arrival of the first enslaved Africans) has earned the city a spot on top travel destination lists.
Richmond, VA: History
Originally a colonial settlement, Virginia's capital is now a thriving hub for culture, shopping and outdoor fun. In addition to its lively neighborhoods and a vibrant restaurant scene, Richmond offers an exploration of an essential chapter of America's history in its cobblestone streets, river walks, and monuments. For example, the city recently marked the arrival of the first enslaved Africans along with other significant events of 1619 — including the arrival of the first women in the colonies and the establishment of the first government — in a 2019 commemoration called American Evolution. Richmond is also known for its dynamic arts and food scene. It has been noted on the New York Times’ list of “52 Places to Go in 2020.”
Richmond: Attractions and Tour
Richmond is steeped in black American history, both tragic and inspiring. From the 1830s to the Civil War, Richmond was the largest American slave-trading hub outside of New Orleans. This is epitomized with its historically-infamous Lumpkin’s slave jail, known as “the devil’s half-acre,” a site in Shockoe Bottom that has been excavated and now provides an experiential road map of Richmond’s slave trade. Richmond also hosts the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, which offers a “stimulating and fun learning opportunity for families” via exhibitions, events, and guided tours exploring African-American history in Virginia. In addition to historical attractions, Richmond is known for its food and arts scene and offers a wide variety of tours from trolley tours to wine and food tastings.
